Photographs and video are the reason many drives fill. A library built over a decade can hold tens of thousands of items, and because Photos keeps originals, previews and indexes in one managed folder, the whole group can grow past a hundred gigabytes without anyone noticing. The good news is that the library is generous with the tools you need to review it.
Where the weight collects
Four kinds of item account for most of the space in a typical library: duplicates, screenshots, long videos, and the items still sitting in the Recently Deleted album. Each has its own list or filter inside Photos, and each can be worked through in a single sitting. Taken together they often return a satisfying amount of room.
Duplicates
Photos can find duplicate items for you. Open the library and look for the Duplicates album, which gathers versions the system believes are the same. You can merge a pair, keeping the best quality copy and setting the other aside. Work through the list patiently; on a large library it can run to hundreds of pairs, and the results are usually genuine.
Screenshots
Screenshots pile up quietly, because they are small enough to ignore one at a time and numerous enough to matter in bulk. Use the media-type filter to show screenshots only, then sort by date and work backwards through the years. Messages, receipts and half-finished thoughts from three years ago are the usual candidates for removal once you have decided they are finished with.
Long videos
Video is where the gigabytes are. A minute of high-quality footage can weigh more than a thousand photographs. Use the filter to show only videos, then review the longest. Holiday clips and screen recordings you have already kept or shared elsewhere are the first to go. Before removing a video, watch a few seconds with the preview to be certain of what it is; names rarely tell the whole story.
Recently Deleted
When you remove an item it moves to Recently Deleted, where it waits for a month before disappearing. Until that month has passed it still occupies space. So there is a two-step rhythm: remove the items you no longer want, then, when you are sure, empty Recently Deleted to actually recover the room. Removals that stay in the album recover nothing at all.
Export before you remove
The safest habit in this chapter is to export before you remove. Photos offers export options for single items, for a selection, and for albums. Choose a destination that is not the drive you are trying to clear — an external drive is ideal. Once the export is complete and you have opened a few of the exported files to confirm they are sound, the originals in the library become copies rather than sole survivors, and removal becomes a low-risk decision.
Never empty Recently Deleted until you are certain the export is good. After the album is emptied the items are gone, and no amount of searching will bring them back.

Keeping it that way
A library stays tidy with very little upkeep. Every few months, glance at the Duplicates album, sort videos by length, and empty Recently Deleted after a review. A quarterly ten-minute pass keeps the heaviest group on your Mac from creeping back to where it started.
